Work History

DRUMMER/Percussionist

Freelance Musician
01.1997 - Current

Carlo Garof is an authentic new millenium musician . He moves freely from jazz to the territories of total improvisation, as well as from blues to contemporary euro-cultured music. His main instruments are the drums (often prepared drums) and percussions and he also uses recycled objects and materials to realize unusual sounds.

His musical education has been eclectic as are his musical interests and artistic world; he was born in Milan in 1975, receiving his first notions of music and singing in the choirs.

He has always been fascinated by the musical aspect of household objects and spontaneously grew close to the world of percussion; as an adolescent he played drums in numerous youth rock, crossover, metal, punk and funk bands .

He was later won over by jazz thanks to the encounter with A Love Supreme by John Coltrane and this very interest brought him to the Civic Jazz Courses of the International Musical Academy of Milan and to the attainment of a diploma there.

He then completed his education by studying African music for many years in countries such as Mali, Senegal and Burkina Faso, lately gaining a music therapy diploma. This variety of studies made him into a musician and an eclectic researcher with an already intense experience of performance in national and international festivals and in prestigious theatres and jazz clubs, together with famous figures on the music scene such as

Antonello Salis, Airto Moreira, Billy Cobham, Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Achille Succi, Umberto Petrin, Franco D’andrea, Enrico Intra, Franco Cerri, Irio De Paula,

Luis Agudo, Paolo Angeli, Roberto Dani, Roberto Cecchetto, Marco Vaggi, Marco Ricci

Paolo Damiani, Daniele Tittarelli, Gak Sato, Steave Piccolo, Carlo Virzi, Alberto Braida, Adriano Guarnieri,

Big Band Accademia Internazionale della Musica Jazz di Milano, Seidou Dao, Sourakatha Djabatè,

Souleyman Kamarà, Cecilia Chailly, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Giovanni Falzone, Erik Legnini, Flavio Boltro, Zeno de Rossi, Andrea Ayassot, Jochen Arbeit, John Colpits.

He is the founder of the post-rock band Hollow Bone and the avant-rock band Tongs. The love and passion for the culture of the Native American peoples lead him to delve into various aspects including the practice of traditional drums. He has collaborated in the creation of readings, films, installations and theatrical performances in Italy and West Africa (Mali) and has played for exhibitions (vernissage, finissage) at various art galleries including the Milan Triennale (Jean-Michel Basquiat) and the PAC-Pavilion of Contemporary Art in Milan (Chen Zhen). He has published recordings with numerous Italian and foreign labels (Feltrinelli, Warner Bros, Long Song Records, Dodicilune, Rogues Records, La Tempesta, Sinusitis, Velut Luna, Full Color Sound, Philology records, Dremingorilla Records).
